What is Fistula?
Fistula is an abnormal opening. This opening can connect two hollow organs known as complete fistula or an organ with skin called incomplete fistula or blind when only one opening is present. Fistula’s can occur at any place, like vesico-intestinal fistula between urinary bladder and intestine, lacrimal fistula in the eye, etc. Fistula-in-ano or anal fistula is one of the common fistula. Anal fistula is an abnormal opening between the anal canal and external skin.
Mechanism:
Between the two sphincters (external and internal anal sphincters) there are many anal glands. The primary function of these glands is to keep the canal lubricated for easy passage of stool. Due to any reason if the opening of these glands get clogged it can cause abscess formation leading to accumulation of pus which can open a tract to skin surface. As the abscess keeps reoccurring due to infections, the fistula remains open.
Symptoms
