What are Urinary Tract Infections?

Urinary Tract Infections or simply referred to as UTI is one of the most common diseases that affect the urinary system of the human body. The urinary tract is a system that consists of Kidneys, ureter, bladder, and, urethra. These work together in making urine and allowing it to flow out of the body.

When infection caused by the invasion of germs occurs to any one of the above organs of the urinary system, it is considered as UTI. Out of all the UTIs, the majorly observed infection is a bladder infection. This is considered the most common infection in this category. Bladder infections are easier to treat and are often painless, but if this is not controlled in its earlier stages, it can lead to much-complicated kidney infection

Symptoms

  • Burning sensation during urination
  • Frequent feeling of need to urinate though not much urine is passed
  • Consistent ache in the lower abdominal area
  • Pain in and around the lower back (kidney area)
  • Fever with chills
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

If the fever is persistent along with nausea, vomiting, and chills, it is suggested to consult the doctor right away. People who are of old age or with pregnancy or who already are suffering from kidney diseases, diabetes, and other infections are more susceptible to UTIs and if there’s an onset of any of the above symptoms, immediate treatment is required.

Causes

In most cases, Urinary Tract Infections are caused due to the germs that actually are present in the large intestine. These are the bacteria called E. Coli that are commonly found in the stool. When a significant amount of these germs breach Urethra, they can travel across the urinary tract system i.e towards bladder and kidneys and eventually causing infections.

Also Chlamydia and Mycoplasma bacteria can also lead to UTIs though they affect only urethra. There are also certain risk factors for the occurrence of UTIs such as Pregnancy, Diabetes, presence of Kidney stone, enlarged Prostate gland. The other causes include a poor diet, unhygienic living, blocked flow of urine, lack of physical activity, and transmission of the same via sexual intercourse.
