What is Thalassemia?
Hemoglobin is a vital constituent in the red blood cells that spread the Oxygen throughout the body. Thalassemia is a blood disorder that causes the body to produce less or abnormal amounts of hemoglobin leading to Anemia. This is considered an inherited genetic blood disorder. Severe cases of Anemia can damage the vital organs and can be life-threatening.
Types of Thalassemia
Thalassemia is again categorized into two types depending on the type of genes that are damaged. They are Beta Thalassemia and Alpha Thalassemia. Hemoglobin is a combination of Beta globin and Alpha globin. While Beta Globin requires two genes for its production, Alpha Globin requires four genes for its production
- Beta Thalassemia occurs when one or both the genes required for its production are damaged or does not function properly. While one damaged gene can lead to mild disorder, both genes damaged can lead to severe anemia
- Alpha Thalassemia occurs when one or more of the 4 genes required for its production are damaged. As the number of damaged alpha genes increase, the complications also increase. If all the four genes are damaged, still birth can occur or the child will die immediately after birth.
Symptoms
While Mild Thalassemia is often symptomless, moderate and severe Thalassemia can cause the following
- Weakness and fatigue
- Easily tiring out
- Shortness of breath
- Children can suffer from frequent fevers, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Causes
Defective genes in any of the parent or their close family members can be passed onto the child. So it is important for the parents to have a medical counselling before trying for pregnancy in case they have these defective genes as severe cases of Thalassemia can lead to stillbirth.
