    What is Gall Bladder Stones?

Gall bladder stones or Cholelithiasis is a condition where stones or calculi are formed in gall bladder. Gall bladder is a small pear shaped organ present just beneath the liver and helps to store and concentrate bile juice secreted by the liver before releasing it into small intestine for digestive purposes. Gall stones are a very common disorder affecting 20% of population. Though it can affect both genders and any age group it is more common among women, especially above forty years of age.

    Causes

    • Increased Cholesterol concentration: function of the gall bladder is to store bile juice. The bile has the ability to dissolve Cholesterol excreted by the liver but when there is increased concentration of Cholesterol, the bile juice secreted is not sufficient to dissolve the excess of cholesterol which precipitates and forms crystals which later on turn into stones. These types of stones are also known as “Cholesterol stones” which are the most common type of gall stones.
    • Increased bile pigments – Bilirubin and other bile pigments are released due to the breakdown of Red blood cells. When there is increase in the amount of bilirubin due to any conditions like blood disorder, liver cirrhosis or infections, it can lead to stones called “Pigment stones” formation.
    • Defect in gall bladder emptying – If there is delay in gall bladder emptying or does not empty completely it can lead to formation of gall stones.

    Risk factors

The risk factors for developing gall stones are:

    • Gender – women are more at risk compared to men for developing gall stones

In many individuals affected by gall stones it is most often asymptomatic. Symptoms develop as the gall bladder tries to expel the stone out. In some cases the stone may obstruct the bile duct causing Obstructive jaundice. The common symptoms which patient may experience are:
